Heat pumps are an excellent choice for many homes. But if an outdoor unit, wider retrofit or changes to your existing heating system do not suit your property, the ZEB heat battery boiler may offer another option.

Use this summer to make a considered choice about your heating

If you are already exploring greener heating options, a heat pump may be one of the first options you have considered. Heat pumps are an excellent choice for many homes, but no single technology will suit every home.

Our heat battery boiler offers another route.

With heat batteries gaining wider recognition as an important part of the UK’s future heating mix, and tepeo’s £2,500 Early Grant Match available to eligible customers, now is a good time to find out whether a heat battery boiler could be right for your home.

Meet the tepeo ZEB heat battery boiler

The ZEB charges using electricity, stores energy as heat and release it through a suitable wet central-heating system when your home needs warmth.

Unlike a traditional storage heater, it does not simply warm the room it sits in. It supplies central heating through radiators or underfloor heating.

And, unlike a direct electric boiler, it does not need to draw all its electricity at the moment heat is required. Smart Charging allows the ZEB to store heat during suitable off-peak periods, ready to use later.

This gives you the familiarity of your existing boiler but with greater flexibility over when electricity is used.

Quick comparison: heat battery vs heat pump

Feature Heat pump ZEB heat battery boiler
How it works Moves heat from the air, ground or water into your home. Stores electricity as heat and releases it when needed.
Energy source Electricity. Electricity.
Outdoor unit Usually required for an air source heat pump. No outdoor unit required.
Indoor installation Indoor equipment is usually required as part of the system. Installed indoors as a boiler replacement, subject to space and access requirements.
Existing radiators May need upgrading, depending on the home and required flow temperatures. Existing radiators can often be retained, subject to a home suitability check.
Flow temperature Usually works best at lower flow temperatures. Can deliver high flow temperatures, with an output temperature range up to 80°C.
Installation disruption Can involve system redesign, radiator upgrades or changes to heating controls. Designed to be a lower-disruption alternative to replacing a fossil fuel boiler.
Day-to-day heating Often runs for longer periods at lower temperatures. Designed to provide a more familiar boiler-like heating experience.
Efficiency & flexibility Very efficient when designed and installed well. Converts electricity into stored heat and is designed to optimise charging around time-of-use tariffs.
Storage capacity Not applicable in the same way; heat is generated as the system runs. Stores up to 40kWh of usable heat.
Best suited to Homes suitable for low-temperature heating and an outdoor unit. Homes where a heat pump may be difficult, disruptive or impractical.
Grant support Currently eligible for Boiler Upgrade Scheme support. Government has announced future £2,500 BUS support; tepeo offers an early £2,500 grant match.

Charge at better times, heat when you need it

By combining your home’s heating patterns with weather forecasts and your energy tariff, the ZEB automatically calculates exactly when, and how much, to charge.

  • It learns your habits: The ZEB matches your actual usage against local forecasts. It holds back on mild days and automatically tops up its core before a cold snap hits.
  • It bypasses peak rates: It avoids drawing power when demand and costs are highest, automatically targeting your tariff’s cheapest off-peak hours to lock in lower rates.
  • It adjusts in real time: Plans change, and so does the weather. The ZEB constantly checks its predictions against reality, making quiet micro-adjustments so you are never left short.
  • You keep total control: Automation doesn’t mean losing your say. Use the tepeo app to set your charging preferences, track your state of charge, or give the ZEB a manual boost whenever you need it.

The tepeo App lets you check the ZEB’s status, manage charging preferences, use Away Mode and request a manual ‘boost’.

A better boiler, built around real homes

With a 10-year guarantee and control via the tepeo app, the heat battery boiler combines rock-solid engineering with smart, flexible heating.

£2,500 early grant match

Eligible customers can get £2,500 off with tepeo’s Early Grant Match, helping make installation more affordable.

Smart tariff charging

The ZEB is designed to charge using cheaper off-peak electricity, helping keep running costs closer to gas. It also cleverly uses machine learning to forecast heat demand through Smart Charging, meaning you only pay for electricity you’ll actually need.

Lower-disruption install

Can be installed relatively quickly, within 1-2 days and can work with existing radiators and pipework for minimal disruption and cost.

No emissions at home

The heat battery boiler does not burn fossil fuels in your home, meaning you’re only heating your home, not the planet.

As seen on Everything Electric

Designed for real homes

“I was apprehensive about it at first because it was a new technology. Now, we love it and would choose it again.”

When Gary first introduced his wife Anna to the ZEB in 2022, she was unsure about choosing a technology they hadn’t lived with before.

The couple had also considered a heat pump, but did not want to give up any of their limited outdoor space or have to change existing radiators.

The tepeo heat battery boiler offered a different route, that they’re happy they chose and say they would choose again if they moved to a suitable home.
