What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government initiative designed to help homeowners replace fossil fuel heating systems (like gas or oil boilers) to clean, low-carbon alternatives. Historically focused on supporting heat pumps, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2026 is set to expand, offering a boiler upgrade scheme grant for heat battery systems, including tepeo’s ZEB

Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant: How Much Can You Get?

From winter 2026, eligible homeowners will be able to apply for a £2,500 boiler upgrade scheme grant when installing a heat battery. By lowering installation costs and encouraging the adoption of clean heat, the grant plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and supporting the UK’s transition to net zero – while delivering long-term comfort and sustainability for properties nationwide.

Who Is Eligible For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You may qualify for the boiler upgrade scheme if:

  • You own your own home
  • You are replacing a fossil fuel heating system
  • Your property meets basic energy efficiency requirements

When Will The Grant Be Available?

Heat batteries will be included in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme from as early as winter 2026, once regulatory requirements are complete.

To make the transition accessible now, tepeo is offering a proactive £2,500 early grant match off every ZEB Heat Battery Boiler, so you can upgrade today without waiting for official grant release.

Is The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Worth It?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can be an effective way to reduce the cost of switching to low-carbon heating, especially if you’re looking to replace an old gas, oil or electric boiler with a more sustainable solution.

When Is The Scheme Worth Considering?

  • You’re already exploring options to upgrade your heating system
  • Your property is suitable for a heat pump or a low-carbon alternative like a heat battery
  • The boiler upgrade scheme grant covers a meaningful part of your upfront investment
  • You want to lower your carbon footprint and future-proof your home

Points To Keep In Mind:

  • Upfront installation costs can remain significant, even with the grant
  • Some systems may require extra home improvements, such as upgraded insulation
  • Not every property is ideally suited to a heat pump or heat battery boiler

Should You Wait For The Grant?

With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme due to expand to include heat batteries as early as winter 2026, more homeowners will soon be eligible for support. However, you don’t need to wait to start enjoying the benefits of low-carbon heating.

To help homeowners begin the transition sooner, tepeo is currently offering £2,500 off the upfront cost of a ZEB Heat Battery Boiler, matching the proposed boiler upgrade scheme grant. This enables you to:

  • Upgrade to low-carbon heating right away
  • Start seeing reductions in your energy bills sooner
  • Avoid waiting for government funding to become available

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can be worth it for many, but the best timing and approach will depend on your home, your budget, and what works for your needs, whether that means using a government grant in the future or making the switch to a suitable alternative today.

How To Apply For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

You don’t need to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme yourself, your certified installer will handle the entire process for you.

If your property is eligible and you wish to upgrade to a heat battery with tepeo, here’s how the process will work when it comes into effect later in 2026:

  2. Find an approved installer
Once your property is confirmed as a good fit, we will help connect you with an MCS-certified installer in your area, which is essential for accessing the boiler upgrade scheme grant.
  3. Receive your quote

  4. Installer applies for the grant
They’ll manage the boiler upgrade scheme application for you, taking care of the paperwork so you don’t have to, when the scheme becomes available.
  5. The grant is deducted upfront
If your application is approved, the boiler upgrade scheme grant is subtracted from your installation cost straight away, making it more affordable from the start.

Why Consider A Heat Battery?

Unlike heat pumps, heat batteries are designed to work like a direct replacement for your boiler, without major changes to your home.

With no outdoor unit required, it works seamlessly with your current radiators and uses affordable, off-peak electricity, making it a practical boiler upgrade scheme alternative.

Key benefits:

  • Lower installation disruption
  • Works with existing radiators and controls
  • No outdoor unit needed
  • Supports your move to net zero

Heat pumps:

  • £7,500 grant available

Everything you need to know

How can I secure my ZEB heat battery boiler in time for winter 2026?

Due to increased demand following the availability of grant funding, we’ve introduced a priority waitlist for customers interested in installing a ZEB heat battery boiler.

Joining the waitlist helps ensure you can secure a ZEB and benefit from a prompt installation when the grant becomes available next year.

To reserve your place on the priority waitlist, we ask for a fully refundable deposit, which can be taken from today.

Can I still buy a ZEB heat battery if my property does not qualify for the grant?

Yes, of course. Provided tepeo or one of our tepeoPRO installers has conducted a home survey to ensure the system is suitable for your home and heating needs; you can still purchase a ZEB as normal.

The government wants Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding to go to homes that meet clear eligibility rules, similar to those used for heat pumps.

For heat batteries, a home must

  • get at least 75 percent of its heating on the coldest days from overnight charging
  • the heat battery must be capable of providing all the heating for the home

These rules are there to ensure the lowest running costs.

However, a home that does not meet the grant criteria may still be an excellent fit for a ZEB. This can include cases such as

  • the running costs remain reasonable even with some daytime charging
  • secondary heating is available for the very coldest days
  • the home’s heating is run by a zoned system involving more than one heating solution
  • the building is not heated fully throughout the year, for example holiday homes

In these situations, a ZEB can still be a practical and effective low carbon option, even without the subsidy.
