Heat batteries join the Boiler Upgrade Scheme following landmark parliamentary decision

It’s a landmark moment for heat batteries! On 14 October 2026, the House of Commons passed legislation to enable the introduction of subsidies for heat batteries through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

For us at tepeo, this is a huge milestone. After years of developing, championing and advocating for heat battery technology, seeing it recognised as part of the UK’s low-carbon heating future is something we’re incredibly proud of.

And – of course – it’s great news for homeowners too, with more choice and greater financial support on the horizon for those looking to move away from fossil fuel heating.

So, what’s changing? And what does it mean if you’re considering a heat battery boiler?

What has changed?

The government has passed legislation to recognise thermal storage technologies, including heat batteries, in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and reaffirmed they will provide a £2,500 grant towards upgrading a boiler to a heat battery.

The scheme already helps households across England and Wales switch to heat pumps. Now, heat batteries are set to join the list of supported technologies.

Heat batteries have been highlighted as a technology that will play an important role in helping the UK move towards a more secure, more flexible and cleaner energy system.

When will the £2,500 grant be available?

The decision has been made, but the grant isn’t open for application just yet.

Before homeowners can benefit from the £2,500 grant, important consumer protections need to be finalised, including the launch of MCS’s design and installation standard for heat batteries.

There’s no confirmed launch date yet, but the government and industry are working with MCS to implement the subsidy as soon as possible and certainly by the spring of 2027.

However, until the government grant becomes available, tepeo is matching it with our own £2,500 early grant match, meaning you don’t have to wait until it becomes available.

Why is this such good news for low-carbon heating?

Decarbonising the UK’s homes is a big challenge, and one that requires a range of technologies working towards the same goal.

Heat pumps are already playing an important role in helping households move away from fossil fuels, and heat batteries bring another exciting option to the mix.

Unlike a traditional gas or oil boiler, a heat battery doesn’t burn fossil fuels to generate heat. Instead, it uses electricity to store energy as heat, ready to provide heating and hot water when needed.

Our ZEB heat battery boiler, for example, can charge during off-peak periods when electricity is often cheaper, then use that stored energy to heat your home throughout the day.

By shifting electricity use away from peak periods, heat batteries can also help support a smarter, more flexible energy system, making better use of electricity at times when demand is lower.

For us, that’s what makes this announcement particularly exciting. It’s recognition not just of another way to heat our homes, but the important role energy storage can play in the future of our electricity system.

Thinking about a ZEB? Here’s what it means for you.

The planned £2,500 government grant is welcome news for homeowners considering a heat battery boiler. But if you’re ready to make the switch sooner, you don’t necessarily need to wait.

At tepeo, we’re currently offering our own £2,500 Early Grant Match, helping eligible customers reduce the upfront cost of installing a ZEB.

Whether you’re looking to replace an ageing boiler or simply exploring your low-carbon heating options, our free Home Check is a great place to start.

In just a few minutes, you can find out whether your home could be suitable for a ZEB and get an initial estimate of installation and running costs.
