How to Beat Heating Oil Price Spikes… Permanently

If you live in one of the 1.7 million UK homes off the gas grid, you know the “Oil Anxiety” all too well. It’s the ritual of checking the tank, watching the global news with a sinking feeling, and trying to time your next delivery between price peaks.

Just this month, many UK households have seen heating oil costs double in a single week due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. For those reliant on kerosene, it feels like a “rural tax” — a volatile, unpredictable expense that you have zero control over.

But there is a way to opt out of the oil market entirely without the headache of a massive home renovation. Enter the ZEB heat battery.

The Problem with the “As-and-When” Oil Market

Unlike gas or electricity, which are typically governed by long-term contracts and the Ofgem price cap, heating oil is a raw commodity bought on the “spot market”. When you order oil, you are paying the price of that exact day.

Several factors make this a risky game for homeowners:

  • Geopolitical Sensitivity: Conflicts in oil-producing regions can cause prices to “jump almost overnight”. We saw this with the war in Ukraine and more recently with the conflict in Iran.
  • The Winter Demand Trap: When a cold snap hits, everyone orders at once. This surge in demand, combined with difficult delivery conditions like snow or ice, sends prices soaring exactly when you need fuel most.
  • Currency Fluctuations: Because oil is traded in US dollars, a weak pound can make your heating more expensive even if the global oil price stays flat.

None of this is in your direct control.

Why Electricity is a Better Bet

While fossil fuel prices are inextricably tied to volatile global markets, the UK’s electricity grid is moving in the opposite direction. As we build more homegrown renewables like wind and solar, we expect electricity prices to fall over the long term and become less and less linked to gas and oil prices.

The ZEB: Your Buffer Against Market Volatility

The tepeo ZEB (Zero Emission Boiler) is a heat battery. It doesn’t burn fuel; instead, it uses electricity to charge up a high-density thermal core and then deliver heat to your home just like an oil boiler.

1. Shift Your Spending to Off-Peak

The “secret” to beating price spikes is Smart Charging. Using machine learning, the ZEB identifies when electricity is at its cheapest—often overnight when demand is low—and stores that energy as heat. While oil prices are out of your hands, you can choose a smart time-of-use tariff and pay as little as 7p/kWh for your heating. At the time of writing, heating oil has hit ~14p/kWh.

2. Predictable Performance

With an oil boiler, you are often at the mercy of the efficiency of your unit and the quality of your fuel. The ZEB converts electricity directly into heat with 100% efficiency at the point of use. It provides the same high flow temperatures (up to 80°C) as your old oil boiler, meaning your radiators stay just as “toasty” without the soot, smell, fluctuating fuel costs or drop in efficiency as oil boilers age.

3. No More “Tank Stress”

Gone are the days of checking the garden tank with a dipstick. The ZEB is installed indoors and draws power directly from your home’s electrical supply. It’s a “fit and forget” solution that removes the need for fuel deliveries and the risk of running out of heat mid-winter. In fact it lets you free up more of your garden & ditch the tank entirely!

Is it a Difficult Switch?

Many oil-reliant homeowners worry that “going green” means ripping up their floorboards for underfloor heating, insulating their whole home, adding bigger radiators or installing a heat pump in the garden.

The ZEB is designed specifically to be a straightforward replacement for a fossil fuel boiler. With oil boilers specifically, it’s quite common to have them mounted on the floor: exactly where your new ZEB could go. This has several advantages:

  • Keep your radiators: Because the ZEB delivers high temperatures, you don’t usually need to upsize your radiators like you might with a heat pump.
  • Keep your pipework: It connects to your existing “wet” central heating system – no need to replace pipework through your home.
  • Fast installation: A tepeoPRO can typically complete the swap in just 1–2 days for a standard installation.

Expert Insight: the ZEB doesn’t have a flue… it doesn’t burn anything, so there’s no fumes to pipe out of your home. This means you can often reclaim the space where your old boiler sat or move the ZEB to a more convenient indoor location like under the stairs if you’d prefer.

Take Back Control of Your Heating

You don’t have to be a victim of global energy markets. By switching to a ZEB, you’re not just helping the planet—you’re future-proofing your bank account against the next inevitable oil price hike. Use our Home Check tool to see if your home is suitable for a ZEB heat battery and take the first step toward predictable, cleaner heating.
