Dr Andrew Murrison MP, Member of Parliament for South West Wiltshire, recently visited a constituent’s home in Westbury to learn more about how heat battery technology is being used as an alternative to fossil fuel heating.
The homeowners, Mr and Mrs Robson, have replaced their previous heating system with a tepeo ZEB heat battery boiler. The system charges using off-peak electricity and stores energy as heat, which can then be used when the home needs it. Its smart charging automatically plans when to charge based on the home’s heating needs, helping make better use of lower-cost electricity. This can help reduce energy bills and cut carbon emissions.
During the visit, Dr Murrison was shown how the ZEB works in a real family home. The homeowners spoke about their experience of the installation, how easy the system is to use day to day, and the impact it has had on heating costs and reliability.
Adam Litchfield, tepeo’s Business Development Manager, also attended the visit. The discussion covered the role heat batteries can play as a flexible and effective heating option for many homes, including rural properties where other low-carbon heating technologies may be more challenging or costly to install.
Speaking after the visit, Dr Andrew Murrison MP said:
“It was good to meet Mr and Mrs Robson to discuss their experience with their heat battery. Technology will generally find a way and offer solutions to the problems society faces. Energy storage and distribution together constitute one of the big challenges and better batteries are going to be part of the answer.”
The homeowners said they were pleased to show Dr Murrison how the system has performed and hoped their experience would encourage other local households to consider lower-carbon heating options.
The visit underlines the increasing role thermal storage technologies could play in improving energy security, making better use of renewable electricity and supporting a cost-effective move away from fossil fuel heating.
For rural households across South West Wiltshire, many of which have historically had fewer affordable clean heating options, heat batteries may offer a practical additional route to low-carbon home heating.
